A musical style
Tango is the combination of classical European and indigenous local musical forms.
The beating heart of the style is found in Buenos Aires, Argentina - the arteries have spread worldwide.
Even to the shores of Casco Bay and Portland, Maine.
Fraseo and marking models
Speaking technically the element of Melody is never strictly played as written. Players agree to a free interpretation of the melodic rhythm.
This is the “fraseo” or “phrase” that lets melody flow according to the feelings of the players and dancers. Jazz-type improvisation is not a requirement.
Underneath are characteristic marking models: patterns connecting the music - and dancers - together.
Play. Tango. Music.
The beauty of Portland, Maine. The energy and elegance of Argentine Tango
Original music. Classic arrangements. Music “Ala Parilla” - hot “off the grill”.
The Casco Bay Tango Project - CBTP
A group of musicians based in Portland, Maine rehearsing each Wednesday. Some have professional training in music, some in medicine, some in technology and some are retired.
All enjoy Argentine Tango - both as a dance and as a musical style.
The group can work as a full classic orquesta tipica, a quartet, any combination of duets or as solo performers.
Traditional tango instruments include flute, violin, viola, ‘cello, contrabass, piano, guitar, singers, accordion…
…and that rarest of musical finds: the bandoneon.
Our primary goal is to perform for dancers…
…in a ballroom, on the street, overlooking the ocean - wherever music, dance and good company can be shared.
